CITY OF GLASS
Frankfurt 2024
“Each time he took a walk, he felt as though he were leaving himself behind, and by giving himself up to the movement of the streets, by reducing himself to a seeing eye, he was able to escape the obligation to think, and this, more than anything else, brought him a measure of peace, a salutary emptiness within...By wandering aimlessly, all places became equal and it no longer mattered where he was. On his best walks he was able to feel that he was nowhere. And this, finally, was all he ever asked of things: to be nowhere.”
Paul Auster - City of Glass
In my latest series of stripe paintings, I delve into the realm of visual expression with a reverence for the profound simplicity of the stripe—a fundamental element that has traversed artistic landscapes throughout history.
In these canvases, echoes of transcendent color fields reverberate, imbuing the stripes with an ethereal quality that transcends the confines of the physical world. I embrace a contemplative approach by infusing each stripe with a sense of rhythm and narrative, aiming to create spaces for introspection and emotional resonance, where color becomes a conduit for the ineffable and a gateway towards altered nuances of perception and time. Thus I explore the interplay of order and chaos within the rhythmic repetition of brushstrokes that become a meditation on the tension between restraint and liberation—harmony emerging from discord, and vice versa.
Through improvisational techniques which I’ve developed, it became possible to perform creative experiments at the intersection of the analog and digital realms, blurring the boundaries between traditional painting and contemporary technology. Using low-tech methods which expand the physical interaction with the materials and canvas, help lead towards a more synthetic and highly entropic state.
In essence, my stripe paintings serve as portals to the liminal spaces where time, perception, and emotion converge, inviting us to confront the infinite within ourselves.
